Milestones

From 6 to 8 years old

Stage 4. Integration of Reading, Writing, and Spelling
Language and Literacy skills are learned through integration across all areas of learning

Children who begin early may be much more advanced than the guidlines suggest

six years Child acquires information by  listening to, and watching TV
  'Silent Reading' sounds like reading aloud
  'Uses the computer keyboard and mouse to write and draw
  Predicts words when you read
  Solves problems when reading by 'guessing' using first letters and pictures
  Solves problems by rereading sentences, and reading past unknown words
 

Begins to use conventional spellings

 

Writes and draws from personal  experience, and observation of life

  Text guide: Choose well known folktales, or other picture story books
  Child is able to read silently but with obvious sub-vocalisation
  Uses language skills to satisfy social and personal needs
seven years

Reads with occasional errors, self correcting mainly when the meaning is lost

Explores new computer programs in depth

Generates rules and understandings about regular spellings

Writes, and is able to read/recall own  writing

Text guide:  Choose Fairytales and simple story books with plenty of pictures for children to follow

Reads silently for a sustained period

  Concentrates and is totally absorbed when reading

Reads new books without help by using a range of problem solving strategies

Analyses words into sounds and syllables

Edits and self corrects writing for  spelling and meaning

Builds a writing vocabulary around personal interests
