From 5 to 7 years old

        Stage 3. Emerging Literacy
The beginninigs of real reading and writing emerge at this time as skills are developed which build on previous experience with language and literacy at home and at school.

Children who begin early may be much more advanced than the guidlines suggest

five years

Child talks in complex sentences

 

'Reads' by using the pictures and remembering the words approximately

  Retells personal experiences in a more organised manner with practice
  Reads by memorising text
  Sounds out words   eg. c-a-t, h-ou-s  
  Recognises a few words
  Plays cooperatively and talks with peers
  Writing is readable by others 
  Uses the computer as an aid to learning, with the focus on writing and reading
Writes left to right, top down directionality
Uses initial letters consistently in writing
  Text guide: Choose books with short, repetitive sentences and matching pictures
 

Child reads by using memory and predicting some words

six years

Reads known stories and rhymes using finger to match most words, but predicting and guessing unknown words!

Writes first and last letters, but no consistent use of vowels for spelling yet 

 

Can write all letters of the alphabet when asked

 

Can write both upper and lower case letters when asked

Uses a variety of computer programs such as games, writing, and drawing or painting

 

Recognises simple word families

 

Text guide: Choose books with 2 lines per page and pictures that match what the text says

 

Reads confidently, leaving out or replacing the occasional unknown word with an alternative

Writes with invented spellings, using both consonants and vowels

Writes as s/he speaks

Repeats same bits of writing every day

Recalls more complex sounds and symbols

  Text guide: Choose books with one paragraph of text and pictures that tell the story too.
