From 4 to 6 years

Stage 2. Transition from home to school
Your four year old needs these skills before starting school.  If your child has already started school you will need to make sure that they have the required knowledge.

Use ages as a broad guide only Tick

Tick the things your child can do, and work on the things that are next for them.

Children who begin early may be much more advanced than the guidlines suggest

Your pre-schooler knows what a word is

 

Sings the alphabet 

  Recognises his/her own name and other labels
 

Plays "I Spy" successfully  

  Writes strings of letters for words, using many capital letters
  Draws as a rehearsal for writing
  Controls the computer to play simple games
  Reverses many letters and numbers when writing
  Spoken sentences sound grammatically OK
  Counts to 10 and more
  Writes a few letters of the alphabet when asked
  Knows common colors by name
  Parents: Read Fairy Tales and Nursery Rhymes
  Retells personal experiences 
 

Points to print but can't yet match words 1:1 with voice

  Attends, concentrates, views and listens for longer periods
five years Spoken sentences are more fluent, but not always correct
  Blends sounds heard  eg.  h-ou-s = house
 

Knows what a "letter" is

 

Knows that print has directionality left-right  

 

Can clap the syllables and sounds in words

  Retells stories in detail, in sequence
 

Writes using many correct letters left to right

 

Writes without spaces

 

Has sorted out some reversals already

 

Parents: Make story time a special time for sharing and enjoyment

  Can point to individual words when being read to
  Can count and touch each of ten objects 1:1
  Recognises most of the alphabet by name and sound
Writes with some spaces  between words
  Typically reverses b/d/p/q, m/w, and maybe others
Follows print left-right, and then returns to the new line below
Explores computer programs and discovers new information
Text guide:  Choose picture story books with no text
Recalls sentences/stories accurately for each page
Writes own first name
Recalls most letters of the alphabet
  Attempts to use full stops and speech marks in writing
Can write the alphabet when asked
  Can match objects to initial sounds
  Text guide: Choose books with one word per page and a matching picture
