School Readiness Checklist
© Philip Builder

Parents, you are your children's first and most important teachers.  During the preschool years you have a huge challenge to prepare your children so that they are mentally, socially and physically prepared for school.

This checklist sets out the experience and skills your children should have by day one.
Use this as a set of goals that you work towards during the first five years.
Area Details I'm working towards it Yes, I am ready!
Literacy I have had a variety of experiences with listening to and learning stories and rhymes, reading books, drawing, colouring, painting and writing.
Social
Skills
I am able to socialise confidently with others and play and share in cooperative ways, and generally adapt my behaviour to suit the occasion.
Personal
Care
I am capable of taking care of myself.  I can dress and feed myself, look after my belongings, take myself to the toilet, and take care of my personal hygiene.
I am aware of the effects of the sun on my skin, and the need to wear a hat during the day.

Personal Safety I am aware of the dangers in my environment.  I can cross familiar roads safely by myself, understand and obey the traffic lights, and know about the safety zones where I should cross.
I know about the danger of talking to strangers, and not to go with them or get into their cars.
I know (or know where I keep) my full name, my house number, street name and suburb, and our phone number.
I have some water skills.  I can swim/tread water/float if I fall into deep water.

Language Skills I am able to converse confidently with adults and other children.  I am able to attend to what others say, listen and follow instructions, or react and respond appropriately.
Physical
Skills

I am physically skilled and active.  I can run, ride, crawl, skip, hop, jump, swing, climb, hit, throw and catch.

Mathematical Skills I am able to count and have some knowledge of numbers.
I know how old I am, and how old the members of my family are, including my pets.
I recognise coins and notes, and can handle money and buy simple things in a shop.
I know the days of the week, and which are work-days and which are weekends.

Technological Skills I am able to use a computer.  I can switch it on, load a program, and use the mouse and keyboard for playing games, drawing and typing.
Learning Style I am personally quite confident.  I am willing to have a go, try, and take risks when learning new things.  When faced with solving problems I don't give up easily.
