Look over the results. You need to
interpret the survey. Would you say that,
overall, your child is more on the happy, confident side; or more on the sad,
unhappy, cautious side? Or, are his/her feelings quite variable,
depending upon the situation? Most children vary according
to what they are familiar with. There are usually a few surprises when you
do this first. Have you discovered something about your
child that you didn't know before? I hope so!
Most people do vary according to their experience.
If they have had some success and their experience
in that area
has been positive, they feel good about their abilities in that particular
thing. The more things you are feeling positive about the higher your self
esteem is likely to be.
To impact on your child's self esteem you need to
help them experience success and give them feedback about themselves which reflects the effort they expend
rather than measure the degrees of success or failure they experience. You
really want them to give themselves a 'pat on the back' for their success rather
than rely on your approval for their success (or implied disapproval if the
praise isn't forthcoming.)
