School Entry Writing Checklist

These are some of the minimum skills for writing required for a child who is entering formal education at the age of five years.

Note that there are reading, behaviour and language skills included here.
 

  Writing Skills Not yet Nearly I can do it
  Draws and attempts to write      
  Knows the difference between drawing and writing      
  Grips the pencil between fingers and thumb      
  Controls pencil well enough to draw and write      
  Can write some letters      
  Can copy new letter shapes      
  Can point to each word as someone reads      
  Knows what letters and numbers are      
  Recognises some words      
  Can write own first name      
  Writes left to right consistently      
  Writes letters in a line left to right      
  Can say/sing the alphabet      
  Can use an alphabet-picture chart to find sounds and letters      
  Can sit still, concentrate, and stay on a task until finished
