This is one activity that should be on everyone's list.
The game of 'Concentration' is an excellent way to teach new words,
alphabet sounds,
maths shapes, animals, colours, objects, etc.
You can play it with 5 year olds to teach sounds for
objects, using pairs of pictures and initial letters. In this
example we will teach 5 new words.
Materials:
- small cards to write words on
- Felt tip pens
- Up to five new words
Instructions:
- Aim to teach no more than five new things at a time,
and up to 10 pairs per game, depending on ability.
- To teach five new words write each word on two cards,
making 5 pairs of words. Alternatively you could use a picture
plus a word for each pair.
- Spread them out face up and make sure that the child
is familiar with them. Check that they recognise the matching pair
by its first letter, shape, or other features
- Shuffle them, and spread them all out face down.
Some people like them in rows and columns, others spread them at random.
- You go first, turning over two cards and leaving them
in their place. It is most important that they remain in their place so
that players concentrate and remember their positions.
- Say each word as you turn it up.
- If you found a pair you get to keep them and you get
another turn. If not a matching pair your turn is finished.
You have to turn them face down, and the other player then takes his
turn.
- Make sure that each player says the word as it is
turned over. This is beneficial to the learner who sees and hears
all words many times.
- If a player cannot say their matching pair they
forfeit their turn.
- The person with the most pairs wins.
